Center of Research and Teaching

The Institute of Psychotherapy has a center of research and teaching that works in three areas of research:

  1. Classification of attachment, Infant Observation and the intergenerational transmission of attachment
  2. Shedler-Westen Assessment Procedure (SWAP) Clinical Interview
  3. Short-Term Mentalization and Relational Therapy (SMART) or a brief treatment based on mentalization for children and adolescents with their families
  4. Maternal Projections and Attributions of Intentionality

Classifications of attachment, Infant Observation and intergenerational transmission of attachment

Infant attachment is measured through infant observation or through the Strange Situation Protocol, and is classified into three categories, secure, anxious-avoidant (insecure) and anxious-ambivalent (insecure), in addition to a fourth category of fearful unresolved attachment. Caregiver-baby dyads at high risk are diagnosed using the Strange Situation to prevent the development of pathology in the child. A clinical intervention is scheduled if the baby’s attachment to its caregiver is diagnosed as being fearful unresolved.

The Adult Attachment Interview (AAI) and the intergenerational transmission of attachment in pregnant women with depression. The dyads of high risk that present disorders of depression are identified and diagnosed, and then a follow up interview is done on the baby at one year of age to re-assess its attachment.

Maternal Projections and Attributions of Intentionality

This investigation proposes that the study of negative maternal projections can help us understand the early dynamic exchange between the caregiver and the child and how it molds the child’s inner life. Our general goal is to validate a new scale designed to measure maternal projections and attributions of intentionality in a Mexican population, and empirically analyze these attributions with the mother’s level of depression and her subsequent perception of the temperament of the baby.

Now that I’ve had the opportunity to be part of the teaching staff of the Institute of Psychotherapy A.B.P., I feel compelled to continue developing in the field of mental health. I can use the resources that we have within the Institute to realize investigations and innovate the field with our research.
